Organizers for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix told Detroit City Council they expect a busy race weekend and outlined sustainability, economic and community programming tied to the event.
Letty, the Grand Prix presenter, said the street-circuit event is set for the last weekend of May and that the operation has matured after three years. “We bought all new block and fence this year. It was worth, every 1 of the million dollars we spent on it,” Letty said, describing new race infrastructure intended to shorten build time and reduce disruption.
Organizers said the race retained gold-level certification from the Council for Responsible Sports and that many operational steps — trucks fueled with renewable diesel, race cars on renewable fuel, tire and fluid recycling, and a robust public recycling and composting program — contributed to a reported 64% waste-diversion rate. Letty said the event is free to the public and estimated overall attendance across the festival weekend reached previous record levels.
Organizers also highlighted community-facing work: a Motorsport Correspondent Program run with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan; an earn-and-learn internship program for small businesses (“Small Business Straightaway”) with scholarships organized with the Michigan Black Business Alliance; and youth STEM and mobility programs (autonomous and drone racing teams) that have qualified for international competitions. Letty said she expected the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Series to return, boosting out-of-state and out-of-country attendance.
The presentation noted a new media partnership with Fox for broader race coverage and ways the event’s marketing translates to hotel stays and convention business: Letty said Siemens booked a convention in Detroit following the Grand Prix.
Council members thanked organizers for outreach to neighborhoods and for efforts to involve youth, black and brown participants and small businesses; organizers asked residents to download the event app for traffic and pedestrian information and to sign up for event updates.
Council did not take formal action on the event update; staff said they would continue coordination on traffic, public safety and vendor outreach as the event approaches.
