Board hears multi‑site construction updates; approves summer borings and related work

The South Fayette Township SD board received a construction update covering the intermediate (3/5) school addition, the middle‑school pool HVAC change, the K‑2 primary school design development, and the bus depot and maintenance facility. District project staff said several elements of work are under way and that borings and other site investigations are planned for the summer to inform construction documents.
Dan Engen provided the update and noted activity on the 3/5 intermediate school project, including permitting and erosion‑sedimentation controls. Jason Depp of the district’s construction contractor told the board he will serve as the project manager and said submittals and OAC meetings are underway. “So far, so good,” Depp said, adding that rebar deliveries and foundation excavation for additions should start soon.
Board members pressed staff about geotechnical borings and soil conditions at the intermediate addition site. Engen told the board that borings showed the same “filled” poor soil conditions encountered previously in that hillside excavation and that the contract documents assumed that condition. “We prepared the documents to assume that that was gonna be the case,” Engen said, and cautioned that final quantities and compaction needs will be determined once excavation begins.
The board also heard that the middle‑school pool HVAC contractor relocated a deck exhaust unit from one end of the pool to the other after the manufacturer objected to the original location, and that the pool work otherwise is proceeding as planned. For the K‑2 building, staff said they expect to complete design development by the end of the summer and are finalizing site work, grading, a full‑size turf soccer field and playground designs; the presentation said the outdoor areas will be fenced and primarily gated during the school day.
For the bus depot and maintenance building, design development is complete and construction documents are due in August, staff said. Utilities routed along Old Oakdale Road will include electric and fiber optics; meter pits for water and gas are planned near the road and the gas meter will have a small fenced enclosure. The district is coordinating with utility companies on routing and equipment sizes.
Board members asked about field protection, noting the intermediate school drilling locations cross an irrigation system; staff said contractors will coordinate with facilities staff, provide drawings, and that the district’s clerk of the works can be present as needed to limit damage to turf and underground systems.
The board then voted to approve construction items 1 and 2 (which authorize necessary borings and related work). The motion to approve construction items 1 and 2 was made by Tom, seconded by Bill; the chair called for the vote and the motion carried.
