Taos County staff to prepare PILT contingency plan amid federal payment uncertainty

Taos County officials told the Board of Commissioners on May 27 that staff have not yet received federal Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) notices for the coming year and asked finance staff to prepare a contingency plan if anticipated PILT funds do not materialize.
During the interim budget presentation, Wendy Harris noted the county “has not heard anything from the federal government regarding PILT,” and county staff and commissioners discussed the possibility of reduced federal payments. Brent (county staff) and other commissioners said they expect notification in June but earmarked a contingency approach in case the amounts are delayed or reduced.
Commissioners and staff flagged that related federal programs, including Secure Rural Schools and other allocations tracked by New Mexico counties, also remain uncertain. County staff said projections in the interim budget are conservative but that a contingency plan will be developed in the next few days to mitigate risk for the final budget.
