Planning Commission continues review of commercial pet care permit to June 9

The Pennington County Planning Commission on May 27, 2025, continued consideration of conditional use permit COCU25-0011 for a proposed commercial pet care facility to the commission’s June 9 meeting to allow time for required property-owner signatures and public advertising.
Jason Thennison, Assistant Planning Director, told commissioners the applicant changed locations and experienced difficulty obtaining the current property owner’s signature; staff now has a completed application and recommends continuation so the item can be publicly advertised.
The commission briefly discussed services the business would provide. Thennison said the applicant plans “more or less like a daycare situation” for pets, anticipates “up to a hundred pets,” intends to offer grooming and would allow patrons to use an on-site malt liquor license while dogs use a dog‑park area. Thennison also said the operation would include both dogs and cats.
The chair called for a motion; a commissioner moved to continue COCU25-0011 to the June 9, 2025, Planning Commission meeting, a second was given and the motion carried with members saying “aye.”
Staff said it will provide a full review at the June 9 meeting, including more detail on proposed operations, site layout and any required permits.
