Paulding County board outlines timeline to appoint replacement for late member John Dean

The Paulding County School District board on May 27 reviewed the legal process and timetable to appoint a replacement for board member John Dean, who died earlier in May.
Board attorney Tom Cable told the board state law requires the remaining members to appoint a qualified resident by majority vote to serve the remainder of the term. Cable said applicants must be at least 18, eligible to vote in Georgia, have lived in Paulding County for at least 12 consecutive months immediately before appointment, and have lived in District 5 for at least six consecutive months immediately before appointment.
Cable said the district will publish advertisements in the Dallas New Era on May 29, June 4 and June 12 and post full qualification details on the district website. The application deadline is 5 p.m. on June 13; applicants must submit a letter of interest, a current resume and proof of residency (for example, a utility bill, driver’s license or voter registration card) to the superintendent’s office.
The board set a schedule of called meetings: application review and selection of semifinalists on June 17 at 8:30 a.m.; interviews of two finalists on June 19 at 8 a.m.; and a vote to appoint a replacement on June 23. The new appointee is expected to be sworn in on the morning of June 24 and attend the first meeting after appointment.
Cable emphasized the board’s discretion in setting procedures but that state law requires a majority vote for appointment and that the appointment does not change the regular election cycle. The appointee will serve through Dec. 31, 2026.
Board members asked clarifying questions about the timeline and public notice. The board chair encouraged the community to apply and asked for prayers for Dean’s family.
