Council raises concerns about long-standing hotel condition; staff say the property is currently compliant

Councilwoman Templeton said she observed torn curtains, visible trash inside windows and other signs that made the facility appear abandoned. She asked whether the city had options to compel improvements beyond code compliance. City staff reported that the hotel had previously been in arrears and briefly operating without a required state license but that, to the staff's knowledge, the property had obtained the required state license and had addressed city code and fire-marshal concerns.
"They got cut up on their business license. They did change ownership, which was helpful as part of that process. And then they did meet, any of our concerns from code and from the fire marshal's perspective," a staff member said. Staff also noted outstanding county health and state issues that had been addressed.
Council members discussed options including municipal code enforcement, abatement or referral to municipal court if the property again violates property maintenance codes. No formal enforcement action was proposed or taken at the meeting; staff said they would continue to monitor the property and pursue code enforcement if violations are found.
