South Colonie outlines summer school schedule and revives driver education program

District staff presented summer school dates, locations and registration details and said the district is restarting driver education with two instructors seeking certification this summer.
District administrators presented a summary of summer programming and plans to restart driver education during the board’s May 27 meeting.
Tom Katchadorian summarized summer-school logistics: registration is scheduled for July 1–2 in the high school west wing cafeteria; summer school runs July 7–Aug. 14 with Regents exams Aug. 18–20. Because of high-school construction, summer school for grades 5–12 will be held at Sand Creek Middle School with three daily session blocks (7:30–9:10 a.m.; 9:15–10:55 a.m.; 11:00 a.m.–12:40 p.m.) and elementary sessions for grades 5–6 at stated session times.
Katchadorian also said the district is reviving driver education after a COVID-era hiatus. Two instructors, Caitlin Carey and Tom Geddes, will pursue certification this summer through a partially virtual/part-on-site training program so the district can offer fall and spring driver-ed semesters. The district plans to recruit two additional instructors to expand capacity in subsequent years.
Dr. Perry and board members noted locations for special education Extended School Year (ESY) programs and limited public access to buildings affected by capital construction.
