Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools recognized students and staff for artistic and athletic achievements and accepted a resolution presented by state Sen. Charlene Oliver honoring students who wrote and performed an Emmy-winning anthem.
Dr. Battle opened the recognitions noting that the students who wrote and performed the anthem are Emmy winners and that several board members heard the performance on the Tennessee Senate floor. State Sen. Charlene Oliver approached the podium to present a resolution and said she invited the students to perform at the legislature to showcase MNPS talent.
The board also recognized a long list of spring athletic achievements across high schools and middle schools. Dr. Battle and board members named multiple champions and runner-ups, including Hillsboro High Schoollacrosse (state champion) and James Lawson High School athletes (team runner-up and individual champions), and highlighted individual performances such as Dream Williams, a freshman who broke a 46-year-old state record in the girls 400 meters.
At the end of recognitions the board acknowledged senior student board member Christine Tran, who said the June meeting was her last and thanked the board. Tran told members she has committed to Vanderbilt University as an economics major and said she will remain involved with the district.
These recognitions were ceremonial and no formal board action was taken on the awards during the meeting.
