Court approves higher pay rate to hire experienced deputy for courthouse security

Sheriff’s office representatives asked the court to approve a weighted salary rate for Floyd Mathis, a deputy who currently performs bailiff and prisoner-transport duties and who has more than 40 years of peace-officer experience. The sheriff said the position was created and funded in January 2023 but remained vacant until Mathis applied and agreed to take on the courthouse-security responsibilities.
Because the proposed salary exceeded the originally budgeted rate by more than the county HR threshold (greater than 6%), county HR rules required court approval. The sheriff recommended approving the higher pay rate to fill the long-vacant position and to benefit from the candidate’s experience. Commissioners voted to approve the pay rate; the motion carried.
The sheriff said the change will be immediate and that three other staffing matters were discussed elsewhere in the meeting. No specific dollar amounts for the approved salary were presented in the public record during the meeting.
