County staff outline renovation of former ATS building for records storage and county offices

Washington County planning consultants on May 27 updated commissioners on plans to renovate the former ATS building on County Road 105 for county office space and records storage and said bids are likely to be advertised in mid-July.
Plan North’s Miss Birch described the project as two functional areas: office space in the front of the building and climate-controlled records storage in the rear. She said plans are about 95% complete and that the back portion will have different building-envelope materials and humidity controls to meet county policy for historic records.
Birch said the design retains the building’s stone and will use maintenance-friendly metal panels similar to the county’s engineering and development building. The front will include a large conference room, a smaller conference room, five offices and an open workspace; the back will be fitted for boxed historic records and books and will incorporate insulation, drywall and mechanical changes appropriate for archival storage. Staff said no exterior site changes to parking are planned at this time.
Birch said the project team is aiming for a mid-July bid advertisement and hopes for strong turnout from local subcontractors. Commissioners and staff said the new facility will relieve storage pressure in the courthouse; Birch noted modern records grow while historic records are a fixed volume and that digitization reduces future storage needs for some materials.
No budget numbers or contract awards were presented at the meeting; staff said they will return with a bid date and renderings when the package is ready.
