A staff member from California Volunteers told a meeting that California’s paid service programs employ more people than the Peace Corps and that student members work on homelessness, wildfire response and food-insecurity projects while earning education awards.
"California has more people enrolled in paid service jobs than the Peace Corps. You guys are doing the work," the staff member said, describing service positions that support community needs across the state.
The presenter said members carry out a range of activities, including work on homelessness response, wildfire response, food-insecurity programs, weatherproofing homes, planning green spaces and diverting food waste. They also said members work in after-school programs, community garden development and support for food banks.
The speaker said college students participating in the program can earn up to $10,000 per year to help pay for school. "These are real jobs in the real world, working with real people to make a real difference," the staff member said.
The speaker closed by inviting listeners to learn more online: "If you're interested in joining us, you can visit us at californiavolunteers.ca.gov."
