Commissioners reviewed Friends of the Historic Building Commission (Friends of HBC) outreach plans — corner-market spotlights, walking tours, lectures and a pedal-bike tour — and heard a community partner report from BG Song about its meeting schedule and action teams.
Commissioner Jeff Havas outlined a schedule of corner-market features and other monthly topics for June through October, including a planned feature at 316 Buttonwood, Don’s Grocery (referred to as “dirty dons”), and the Lincoln House at 325 North Main in October. Havas said he had several documented sources and examples to support the planned features.
The commission described a recent pedal-bike tour as successful. Commissioner Jeff Havas and other presenters reported that the Saturday session was nearly full and the Sunday session was full, and that local media attended: “Jan McLaughlin from the BG Independent News was along and so was, Glenn Corp from WBGU,” one commissioner said, noting positive participant feedback.
The commission also discussed a citywide scavenger hunt tied to Historic Preservation Month; staff reported zero completed submissions at the time of the meeting and extended the deadline to June 2 to accommodate participants.
Rose Drain, representing BG Song, briefed commissioners on BG Song’s schedule and action teams: “We have a monthly board meeting which is at 06:30PM at Trinity United Methodist Church, on the second Monday of each month,” and listed the transportation and mobility team and the climate action team meeting schedules. Commissioners asked whether to maintain a formal liaison; they agreed informal updates and occasional attendance from BG Song were sufficient for now.
Jan Knapp and other residents asked about how to begin the local-designation application process; staff pointed to the city website where the local consent form and the building-inventory form are posted and offered to assist residents in completing the inventory.
