County clerk outlines key dates and rules for 2025 Los Alamos school board election
Summary
Los Alamos County Clerk Michael Redondo briefed the board on filing deadlines, absentee and early voting dates, same-day registration, and which board districts are on the 2025 ballot.
Los Alamos County Clerk Michael Redondo told the school board that the 2025 regular local election is Nov. 4 and that candidate filing and voting timelines important to school-board hopefuls begin this summer.
Redondo said candidate filing day for the school board will be Aug. 28; candidates must file in person in the county clerk’s office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on that date, though a candidate may arrange for someone else to file on their behalf with the correct paperwork. He said there is a write-in candidate filing opportunity and the last day a candidate may withdraw is Sept. 2.
In-person early and absentee voting begin Oct. 7. Redondo said absentee ballot requests must be made by Oct. 21 and that absentee ballots will begin to be mailed Oct. 7; the last day absentee ballots can be received in person is 7 p.m. on election day. Early voting runs through Nov. 1.
Redondo also explained same-day voter registration: a voter may register at the polls on election day if they provide proof of residency that meets state requirements. He pointed attendees to the New Mexico secretary of state’s site (nmvote.org) for forms and voter-status checks.
Redondo told the board that Districts 1 and 2 will be on the 2025 ballot; he described District 2 as the eastern half of White Rock and District 1 as the western half plus a small hill area. He offered to help residents determine district boundaries through an address search in the clerk’s office.
Board members discussed civic engagement at the high school: Member Spector asked about voter-registration drives and Redondo said the clerk’s office has regularly run registration efforts on National Voter Registration Day and would like to expand visits to periods when seniors are together during graduation-week activities. He said outreach to civics classes and student groups such as iGUIDE could also be arranged.
Redondo encouraged prospective candidates to use the secretary of state’s forms and to come to the clerk’s office ahead of filing day to prepare forms and any authorization paperwork needed for another person to file on their behalf.
