Mendel Fan Fest drew costumed fans, local artists and small crowds to the Mendel Library for a mini convention of cosplay, artist booths and family activities, Cheryl Conn reported.
Participants said the event brought together fans of film, comics, video games and anime and gave attendees a chance to meet creators and other enthusiasts. “It’s fun to pretend. You know, they see themselves in these characters that they watch on in movies and television and such. So I think it’s just it’s good escapism and it’s fun and it’s and it’s exciting and it’s innocent,” a member of the 500 First Legion Bridal Garrison Everglades Squad said.
Organizers staged an indoor market where artists sold classic comic and original artwork and spoke directly with fans, the report said. The event included representatives of Star Wars and Star Trek fandoms and a range of other pop-culture costuming communities; one participant added, “I like Klingons, but they’re not Star Trek doesn’t even do it. No.”
The coverage described the gathering as a mix of staged character appearances, artist tables and general fandom socializing inside the library. The reporter identified the event as a “mini convention at the library” and noted the variety of costumes and vendors on site.
