Round Rock City Council authorized the city manager to submit an application to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles for the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority (MVCPA) grant program for fiscal year 2025–2026.
Police Chief Banks (referred to in the presentation) told the council the grant request would be for roughly $514,000 with a 20% local match (about $102,000). The equipment and uses described include additional license‑plate readers, infrastructure for drone first responders, additional traffic cameras and training.
Chief Banks said the department has already used grant funding from a prior MVCPA award to secure equipment and that staff will return to council next meeting requesting authorization to procure license‑plate readers funded by the earlier grant. Mayor Morgan and council members praised the department for its investigative use of cameras and license‑plate reader systems.
The council voted unanimously to authorize the application after a motion by Council member Ortega and a second by Council member Lee.
