Representatives from Mackenzie Bay asked the Dunn County Commission to consider funding a roughly $2 million reconstruction of the public access road to Mackenzie Bay and Elmer's Point.
Doug Nelson, representing Mackenzie Bay, told commissioners the road has deteriorated to the point of becoming a safety concern after decades of use and recent campground traffic increases. He said core sampling showed the base needs work and the club proposes removing existing pavement, stabilizing soft spots, reusing crushed asphalt mixed with new aggregate and placing a new 4‑inch asphalt lift to extend service life. He provided an estimated project cost of about $2 million and said the road is approximately 1.75 miles long.
Nelson said Mackenzie Bay is a public road that serves about 50 cabins and many seasonal campers; he asked the county to contribute funds and pursue possible additional state or federal recreation funding. Commissioners thanked the group and asked to evaluate county budget resources and to do a site visit. The commission moved to table the decision until staff could review the request, produce budget options and assess engineering details.
