Frisco uses connected-vehicle and signal analytics to spot failures, measure improvements

Frisco engineering staff told the City Council on the municipal meeting that the city is using new connected-vehicle and signal-analytics tools to identify signal equipment failures and measure travel-time changes across corridors.
Jason Bridal, director of engineering services, said Frisco "now have 167 signalized intersections" and that the city has built a Power BI dashboard that compares drive times across corridors using INREX data. Bridal said the tools showed the Main Street corridor from 423 to Custer took "about 24 seconds longer on average" after construction started, and that peak-hour differences approached one minute.
Bridal described two practical uses: daily emails that flag intersections with the largest changes in delay time so crews can investigate early, and before-and-after comparisons that quantify the benefits of projects. He cited a recent project at 423 and Lebanon where adding a second left-turn lane on the westbound approach reduced average intersection delay by roughly 10 seconds per vehicle and cut left-turn/through movement delay by more than a minute per vehicle.
Bridal also said the analytics helped locate mechanical issues: after an intersection showed abnormal delay, staff found "a broken detection panel." He said the city receives a daily report and that the data let staff be proactive rather than waiting for a complaint.
Councilmembers discussed upcoming consent items that fund signal installations. One councilmember noted residents sometimes expect signals to speed travel but that signals are primarily a safety measure; Bridal agreed safety is the first goal. Bridal urged residents to report issues through the My Frisco app and to include location, direction and time-of-day details so crews can narrow investigations.
Bridal described the program as new and evolving, and said Frisco is considered "a statewide leader" for how it uses the data.
Ending: Councilmembers indicated continued interest in the data; one member said they would follow up with additional questions for Bridal and his team.
