Board votes to support OCSBA bylaw changes and county resolutions after trustee debate

The Birmingham Public Schools Board voted to support proposed Oakland County School Boards Association (OCSBA) bylaw amendments and the OCSBA resolutions package after discussion among trustees.
Trustee Hochner reviewed the bylaw amendments and said most were minor or grammatical; trustees raised no objections and signaled support. The board voted to support the bylaw amendments 6–0.
Trustee Zammit raised substantive concerns about several of the OCSBA resolutions—specifically those advocating universal, taxpayer‑funded programs such as universal free school lunches, universal preschool funding and mandatory kindergarten on philosophical grounds. Zammit said she was "not in favor" of codifying universal free lunches or universal taxpayer funding for preschool and was unsure about mandatory kindergarten.
Trustee Hochner and other trustees responded that OCSBA represents 29 districts in Oakland County with varying resource levels and that the resolutions reflect the broader membership’s needs; some trustees said draft resolutions are intentionally flexible to accommodate different district priorities.
After discussion the board voted to support the OCSBA resolutions package 6–0. Board staff said they will file Birmingham’s votes and related paperwork with Oakland Schools and OCSBA by Friday, June 6, per the association’s timeline.
