Terrebonne Parish finance staff reported to the Finance, Insurance and Section 16 Lands Committee that sales‑tax collections for March rose 7.07 percent compared with the prior period.
Michelle Klingman, who presented the monthly sales‑tax update and the budget‑to‑actual packet, said the March increase was reflected in the materials distributed to the committee. Committee members discussed possible causes; Superintendent Matt Ford suggested that businesses may have front‑loaded purchases in March and April in anticipation of possible tariffs, which could temporarily inflate collections. Finance staff also noted that a late Mardi Gras this year may have shifted some economic activity into March.
The committee treated the report as informational; no committee action was taken. Members cautioned that month‑to‑month volatility can occur and urged continued monitoring, particularly when one‑time factors (holiday timing, inventory purchases) might distort year‑over‑year comparisons.
