The Terrebonne Parish School District Education Technology and Policy Committee on May 20 recommended that the board approve an option to extend the district’s interagency agreement with Terrebonne Arc (TARC) to continue a high-school internship program into the 2025–26 school year after 14 students participated in the program this year.
Mister Pellegrin summarized the inaugural year: "we had 14 students that participated from our high schools, all of them completed the program, and we found out recently that 1 of them is actually gonna be hired by TARC in mid June to start working at their businesses." Pellegrin said there are potentially three other students who may be hired and called the program a success for participating students.
Committee members asked about capacity to expand internships. Pellegrin said the district is pursuing additional employer partners, citing a lead with Terrebonne General and noting that Terrebonne Arc’s thrift store and the hospital are located on Enterprise Drive, which could allow the district to "pinch potentially use the same transportation." Pellegrin also addressed staffing and funding for supervisors who accompany students: when asked whether those staff would be paid from federal program funds or district general fund, Pellegrin said, "Right right now, it comes from general fund."
The committee recommended that the board "approve and accept the option to extend the current interagency agreement that institutes an internship program between Terrebonne Parish School District and Terrebonne Arc for the 2025–26 school year and further authorizes the superintendent to sign all necessary documents pertaining thereto." A motion to approve was moved by Mister Ford and seconded by an unnamed committee member; no public objections were recorded and the presiding member declared the motion approved by consent.
The extension continues a district effort to place high school students in workplace internships with local employers; Pellegrin said transportation and staff capacity remain constraining factors for expansion.
