Talos Ferris, director of veteran services for Fall River City, opened the Memorial Day ceremony and said the event was meant to be "a living tribute to those we can never thank enough." The program included a prayer by Reverend Andy Stinson, the pledge of allegiance, a wreath laying, the playing of taps, and remarks from community leaders.
The ceremony focused on Italian Americans who served in the U.S. armed forces. Joseph A. Marshall, a speaker at the event, described Memorial Day as distinct from Armed Forces Day and Veterans Day, saying, "Memorial Day is for those who never made it out of their uniform." Mayor Paul Coogan said he would continue to attend the ceremony while in office: "As long as I'm mayor, I will be here to make sure we honor these people of Italian descent who fought so bravely and fairly for our country and their own."
Organizers included members of the Sons and Daughters of Italy, Lodge 1035, who were credited in the remarks for erecting and maintaining a monument honoring those of Italian descent who died in military service. Victor Farrios served as the city's flag officer and graves officer during the ceremony. Attendees observed a moment of silence while taps was played.
The program featured two prayers from Reverend Andy Stinson that asked attendees to remember the sacrifice of Italian-American service members and to carry forward their example of duty and honor. The event closed with brief remarks urging the community to translate remembrance into action and service.
