Mayor Pereira said the Village of Mineola learned this week that several of the projects it submitted to the New York Forward program were approved, including the Second Street improvement project, a walkability and connectivity link between Station Plaza North and Second Street, a public mural by Davenport Press, and lighting, streetscape and wayfinding improvements.
The grants cover public projects that Mineola officials said were included in a larger slate of public and private proposals the village submitted. "We then, in December, submitted a list of projects ... Obviously, we only got awarded $4,500,000 but we purposely sent up more," Mayor Pereira said.
Why it matters: the mayor said approved public projects will move into engineering, requests for proposals and construction planning. "From when we got the money to when this is done, it probably will be, you know, 4 to 5 years. So we're looking at 2 to 3 years from now," Mayor Pereira said, describing the multi‑year nature of design and build phases.
Officials described next steps as engineering and RFP processes. Mayor Pereira also said some private projects submitted by business owners and property owners were selected and some were not; she directed residents to the New York Forward press release for the full list of approved projects.
Deputy Mayor Sartorius urged residents to attend upcoming downtown events and said the grant award will help "improv[e] our downtown even more." Mayor Pereira noted the village had held monthly public workshops during the application phase and that the list of projects submitted exceeded the eventual award amount.
The village did not provide a detailed project‑by‑project funding breakdown in the meeting; officials said engineering and procurement work will follow the grant award and that timelines will firm up as those steps proceed.
Officials said local press (Newsday) had contacted the village and that further public information will be posted as the village advances design and procurement.
