Jim Wells County Commissioners Court approved the county treasurer’s monthly report, accepted the county auditor’s financial reports and approved payroll and bills as submitted, with specified exemptions.

County financial staff presented the sales tax breakdown and year-to-date comparisons. The auditor reported April sales tax receipts of $256,088.01 for Jim Wells County and said the county’s collections are roughly equal to the prior year at this point. On revenues, the general fund had collected 70–75% of budgeted revenues (presented as 70.75% on one line) and total collections across funds were reported at about 75%. On expenditures, the court’s year-to-date target through April is 33.3% and overall expenditures were near that target, with some departments above and county staff following up with those departments.

During agenda item 10 the court approved payroll and bills as submitted by the county archiver/treasurer with the explicit exemption of funds 52, 503 and 54. The court made and seconded motions on the treasurer’s report, the auditor’s reports and the payroll/bills item; each passed by voice vote with no roll-call tallies read into the record.

Why it matters: the reports provide the public record of county revenues, expenditures and sales tax performance and the payroll/bills approval authorizes payment of county obligations. County staff said year-to-date revenues are consistent with last year and that they will continue to monitor departments whose expenditures exceed targets.
