The Osceola County Board of Supervisors approved sharing the cost of a medical examiner investigator training class and discussed a pay structure for local personnel who respond to coroner calls.
Two clinic staff members, Nathan Peters and Taylor Bradshaw, requested county payment of the class fee (reported on the record as $500 per person). Supervisors voted to pay half the class fee for each attendee; Supervisor Helmers moved and Supervisor DeBoer supported the motion, which passed by voice vote.
Separately, county staff recommended setting pay for local medical examiner investigators when they go on scene and submit reports. Staff noted that some Iowa counties pay $2.50 per call to the medical examiner and that local ME investigators submit reports that must be signed off by the medical examiner to be final. Supervisors discussed splitting the per‑call fee so that the on‑site investigator receives half (about $1.25) and the medical examiner receives the other half for sign‑off, and they directed staff to bill medical‑examiner charges separately when possible.
The board asked staff to gather additional information about billing and prior calls before finalizing a recurring pay policy. Supervisors instructed staff to separate any investigator bills from standard medical examiner billing and to return with recommended administrative procedures and any outstanding claims for the two individuals who had already responded to calls.
