Student representatives from five Springfield schools gave the School Committee brief updates on year-end events, internships and career-readiness programs during the meeting’s student advisory segment.
Ava Moore, senior class president at Putnam Vocational Technical Academy, told the committee Putnam hosted a decision day on May 1 that celebrated seniors’ post‑high‑school plans and offered students support regardless of whether they were headed to four‑year college, two‑year college, the military or the workforce. Moore said Putnam students also benefited from dual‑enrollment college courses through STCC’s College Now and HCC’s dual enrollment programs and that those credits had saved her money before she starts at the University of Hartford in the fall. “No matter if they’re going to a 4 year college, a 2 year college, a military branch, or straight to the workforce, our twelfth grade team, especially our counselors, wanted to make sure that we all felt welcome, celebrated, and appreciated,” Moore said.
An eleventh grader from Springfield Public Day, Leishani Salazar Saldana, described a Spanish for Health Professions course, a math field trip that linked math to stage lighting and work at the school PBIS store where students gain customer‑service and management skills. Kamora Diaz, senior class president at the High School of Science and Technology (Scitech), said Scitech’s inclusivity and recent vocational growth produced new internships and hands‑on opportunities for upperclassmen, along with expanded music and festival participation for the band.
Brian Avila, student representative from Renaissance High School, described school traditions including senior march‑outs and a recent declaration day that celebrated students’ chosen pathways. Tony Martins, junior at Springfield Virtual School, said SVS held a successful second prom, is planning a spring‑fling field day and is producing the school’s first yearbook; he also noted SVS graduation is scheduled for June 6 at King Philip’s Stockade at Forest Park and will be streamed on YouTube at 3 p.m.
Committee members thanked the students and their advisors for the updates; no formal committee action was taken. The student reports highlighted ongoing district programs — dual‑enrollment, CTE and student engagement activities — that district leaders later tied to the committee’s postsecondary‑success priorities during the meeting’s presentation segment.
