Meg FlindersPay, librarian for programming, told the commission the library’s 2025 summer reading program — part of the Collaborative Summer Library Program with the theme “Color Our World” — will begin signups May 31 and will shift many events off‑site because of construction.
“We anticipate approximately 3,000 participants this summer,” Meg said, and added that staff expected slightly lower participation than the prior year because of the renovation. She said the kickoff will be May 31 at Hillcrest Park, story times and several programs will use outdoor spaces or partner facilities, and the finale for program completers will be a pool event on Friday, Aug. 1.
To increase completion among younger children, staff reduced the reading requirement for ages 0–5 from 10 hours to five hours; readers age 6 and older must read 10 hours to qualify for the finale. Meg said the library will use the Beanstack app to track participation and will provide bookmark tracking sheets for parents who prefer a paper option.
Prizes include a city‑custom coloring book produced with local sponsors and ticketed prize drawings; staff said they worked to acquire donations and purchased additional toys for younger age groups. Meg said the library will cap pool attendance for safety and use wristbands for entrants and that the program will offer tween and teen events such as Wings of Fire‑themed activities and a teen after‑hours takeover scheduled at Timpanogos Park.
Meg asked commissioners to note that many programs will use parks, the Hillcrest Center and other Orem spaces to preserve program continuity while the building is under construction. Staff said limited prize pickup logistics would be handled later in July once custom materials are delivered.
