Library board adopts programming code of conduct after disturbance at crowded children’s event

The Cottage Grove Library Board approved an addition to the library’s programming code of conduct after directors reported a disturbance during a large children’s event.

Board members said the policy was drafted based on policies from nearby libraries after an incident at a “slime party” that drew an estimated 100 children and became difficult for staff to manage. The policy posted with the agenda includes updated procedures; board members and staff discussed how to implement tracking for warnings, removals, and ongoing issues.

Tracy (library programming and outreach specialist) described the incident and said the event’s size and structure made it difficult for staff to address a disturbance without disrupting programming. Board members discussed using volunteers at a small number of high-attendance events to assist staff and reduce the risk of similar incidents.

JP Vavencio (board member) moved to approve the policy addition as written; Megan seconded. The motion carried on a voice vote.

Board members said the policy is a starting point and will be reviewed as part of ongoing policy review periods; staff and volunteers will discuss implementation details for large events.
