A Sun City West resident on May 22 urged owner members to review and sign a petition opposing—or seeking fuller public review of—a proposed BNSF intermodal rail hub planned on equipment‑area land, and asked residents to contact county and state elected officials.
Bud Meador, card number 132059, addressed the Governing Board during the public comment period and said the petition and sample letters are available for residents to take to their officials. He said the land involved totals about 4,400 acres and that BNSF plans to build on roughly 4,300 acres; he urged residents to first contact the county board of supervisors because that body will vote on rezoning. Meador said there is a July meeting between BNSF and the board of supervisors, and an August meeting to decide on rezoning; he asked that the meeting schedule be moved to November or February so seasonal residents can participate.
Meador cited concerns about traffic, property values and health effects, and noted short‑term air quality concerns: "Air quality index for the past 10 days has been unhealthy to pass to, poor." He concluded by inviting residents to "take a look at the stuff that we've got out there for you. I think you'll find it, informative and certainly to your interest." The board did not take formal action on the petition during the meeting.
The resident provided printed material and sample letters and encouraged contacting local elected officials—the county board of supervisors, the governor's office and congressional delegation—about the proposed project and upcoming hearings.
