The Bulloch County Planning and Zoning Commission voted to recommend approval of a conditional‑use permit allowing a farmers market and the hosting of private and public functions at a property on Bell Road owned by Lloyd Strickland.
Why it matters: The proposal would allow the Brooklyn Farmers Market to relocate from Railroad Street to greenhouses at 1888 Bell Road and operate organized market events on Saturdays.
Planning staff described the site as AG‑5 zoned, historically agricultural and located in the Royal Open Space character area; staff recommended approval with conditions spelled out in the staff report. “The staff recommends approval of the conditional use request,” said Mary Deloach, the planning staff presenter.
Michelle Wilson, owner of the Brooklyn Farmers Market, told commissioners she contracted the greenhouses from Lloyd Strickland and planned Saturday operations between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. She said the location better fits the market’s agricultural character. “We contracted the greenhouses for Mr. Strickland at 1888 Bell Road, and we felt it was better for us actually to hold a farmer’s market there in a more... an agricultural environment,” Wilson said.
Public works reviewed the proposal and did not identify vehicular conflicts given the property’s location on a county‑maintained dirt road, staff said. The commission voted to recommend approval; the county commissioners will make the final determination at their June 3 meeting.
Next steps: The item will be scheduled for a county commission hearing on June 3 where final approval and any permit conditions will be decided.
