The Clearwater Community Redevelopment Agency, in partnership with the Downtown Development Board, has commissioned seven mural and chalk artists to produce 12 custom chalk designs for local high schools graduating at BayCare Sound.
Amber Brace, Arts and Cultural Affairs Manager, said each school's chalk design will reflect school colors, mascots and names, and the event will include two to three three-dimensional end-cap designs for photo opportunities. Brace told the board the temporary artworks, weather permitting, will be on display from Wednesday, May 28 through Sunday, June 1 along the 400 block of Cleveland Street.
Staff said the CRA ran an open call and a panel selected the seven artists. Schools holding graduation at BayCare Sound were notified and encouraged to bring students to find and photograph their school's chalk art. The board discussed logistics and confirmed the chalk works are temporary and intended to be interactive for graduating students and families.
No permitting or safety issues were raised during the discussion; staff said materials and placement would be managed through existing park/event permitting processes.
