First Lady Suzanne Youngkin visited Larry Moore Elementary during Virginia Volunteer Week to observe Girls on the Run Hampton Roads and to highlight volunteer contributions to Norfolk Public Schools.

Youngkin met with the local Girls on the Run chapter, which the district said has a 19-year partnership with Norfolk Public Schools to support life-skill development, physical activity and community volunteer involvement. The announcement said the First Lady visited to both see how the program benefits students and to mark National Volunteer Month.

Youngkin described two goals for the visit: to see program benefits and to highlight volunteer efforts across Hampton Roads. "We're here for two reasons," she said. "One, we want to see how Girls on the Run benefits these young students, how it brings them together as a community, gives them confidence, helps them be more physically healthy. ... And secondly, this is National Volunteer Month, and so we want to highlight the great work that's being done by Hampton Roads area volunteers."

The district said volunteers, educators and nonprofit partners attend and that the visit promotes service and leadership in the school community.
