A Cheat Lake resident reported to the Monongalia County Commission on May 21 that a left-lane closure on the I-68 bridge near Saberton has been in place for more than a month with little or no visible work and increasingly severe traffic backups.
"Last week, the westbound traffic was backed up past Pierpont Exit down to the Cheat Lake bridge," the resident reported in an email read to commissioners. The resident said a typical commute that took about 45 minutes and cited tractor trailers blocking merge lanes and unsafe passing conditions.
Commissioners said they had passed the complaint on to the West Virginia Department of Transportation and asked for assistance or information about the project timeline. The meeting record indicates the county will seek clarification from WV DOT about why cones and a lane closure remained in place without active work and whether the lane can be reopened when crews are not on site.
The resident asked that the county request that the lane be opened when no active construction is underway. Commissioners did not announce a specific follow-up deadline nor provide a DOT response at the meeting.
