Council member: New Dimensions residents to be offered Section 8 vouchers as public housing transfer nears completion

“On Thursday, 05/22/2025, the Hickory Public Housing Authority will post notices on homes of New Dimensions residents for their option to apply for Hickory Public housing voucher,” the council member said during general comments, adding residents may remain in their current homes if they choose.
The speaker said the notice follows a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requirement and referenced a rental-assistance demonstration (RAD) agreement from February 2015, noting that the voucher option should have been provided previously but was not. The council member said the notices will be posted on doors for 311 New Dimensions units and urged community organizations and churches to help disseminate the information.
The speaker praised Interim Executive Director Anthony Starr and the public housing board volunteers for their work on the transfer. “They have worked hard with the new revised secret public housing board that was appointed by our mayor and Anthony Starr and his staff,” the speaker said, urging residents to apply if they wish to move from the properties.
Council members did not record a vote or formal action on this announcement during the meeting; the remarks were presented as an informational update to the council and public. No additional implementation dates or application deadlines were given in the remarks that evening.
