Franklin Park awards 11 community scholarships to graduating seniors

Franklin Park borough officials presented 11 Franklin Park Community Scholarships on May 21, awarding $1,500 to each recipient to support their postsecondary study plans.
The scholarships, first awarded in 2004 following a recommendation by junior council member Jacob Ramsey, have been funded by revenue from the borough newsletter ads, private donations and proceeds from an annual scholarship golf outing; borough officials said no tax dollars were used. Borough staff said the program has distributed approximately $222,000 in scholarship funds since it began.
Mayor O'Keefe presented vouchers to the recipients as their names were called. The students announced their college plans at the podium: Anna Bridges said she will attend Penn State to study biology; Caden Kurikowski said he will attend Penn State Behrend to study biology; Linda Kong said she will attend Northwestern University for computer science; Sandra Lee said she will attend the University of Pennsylvania to study biochemistry; Tane Mishra said he will study computer science at Carnegie Mellon University; Julie O'Keefe said she will attend the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in chemistry with a bioscience concentration; Emily Quinlan said she will attend The Ohio State University to study nursing; Neil Lynch (Samantha?) said they will attend Drexel University's BS/MD program to study biology; Emily Sobohart said she will attend Penn State's Schreyer Honors College to study pre-medicine; Catherine Varghies said she will attend Sarah Lawrence College to study engineering; and Arsha Zaidi said she will attend Duke University, co-majoring in physics and global health.
Council recognized members of the scholarship selection committee who reviewed applications and recommended winners. Borough staff encouraged community support of the 2025 scholarship golf outing on July 28 at Cranberry Highlands Golf Course.
The borough invited attendees to remain for the council meeting or depart after the presentation.
