Danielle Hampton, executive director of the Suwannee County Chamber of Commerce, called Norris an “outstanding leader” and a “bridge builder.” Julie Ulmer of River Oak Technical College, Michael McWalters and regional partners including Jeff Hendry and Diane Scholes spoke in favor of rehiring Norris and cited his established relationships with state agencies, workforce institutions and project leads.
Several commissioners said the board had previously authorized Commissioner White to negotiate the agreement and defended the board’s collective decision‑making after public criticism of the negotiation process. Commissioners also clarified contract details: the board shortened the contract term from five years to a one‑year term with automatic annual renewals and removed a proposed 25% restoration of previously accrued sick leave. The county attorney and commissioners discussed severance: the contract provides severance consistent with the maximum allowable under Florida law (20 weeks), which the public questioned during comment.
County Attorney Morrison confirmed an effective start date for the contract of Friday, May 23.
Action: Commissioner White moved to approve the employment agreement; Commissioner Mobley seconded. The board conducted a roll‑call and voted 5–0 to approve the contract. The chair announced Mr. Norris’s start date would be May 23.
