Commission tables decision on moving war‑and‑mining memorial, punts tree removal until June

The Bexley Tree and Public Garden Commission on an announced motion voted to table consideration of removing two trees that now screen a memorial — and of relocating the memorial nearer the flagpole — until its June meeting.

Commissioners and members of the public debated whether the memorial, which honors veterans and local miners, is sufficiently visible in its current location and whether the trees obscure it. Several participants said the site should be “visible at all time,” and others described potential high costs and equipment needs to move a granite monument that likely sits on a concrete base.

Commissioners discussed short‑term options, including limb trimming or temporary netting to pull branches back before Memorial Day. A staff member noted trimming could be done as a short‑term fix and suggested an on‑site review before any permanent work. After the discussion, a motion to table the item until the June meeting was made, seconded and approved.

The motion does not direct staff to remove trees or move the monument; it preserves discussion for the next regular meeting and gives members time for a site visit and additional research on foundations, costs and alternatives.
