Veterans commission reports $3.7 million in new benefits and Aurora VA clinic expansion

Jake Zimmerman, representing the Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission, told the Public Service Committee on May 22 that the commission has brought in more than $3,700,000 in new benefits year‑to‑date and currently has 389 claims pending with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Zimmerman said the commission’s compensation claims are processed faster than state averages—"our compensation claims are going 15 days on average faster than the average Illinois veterans"—and pension claims are also moving faster than statewide averages. He said those quicker processing times translate into earlier benefit flows to veterans.
Zimmerman also described expansion work at the Aurora VA Clinic (located in North Aurora), saying the facility remodeling adds more than 4,200 square feet of clinical space and doubles the clinic’s size to include primary care, physical therapy, women's health, audiology, nutrition and lab services. A tentative grand opening was scheduled for Thursday, May 29 at 11 a.m., pending final approvals.
Zimmerman encouraged committee members to attend county Memorial Day ceremonies highlighted in the county newsletter and invited members to the clinic opening if it proceeds.
No committee action was requested or taken; the report was informational and the commission will continue its outreach and casework.
