Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center recognizes 14 Ohio County students as 'High School Heroes' and awards $1,000 scholarship

Vicky Ellis, director of communications, development and recruitment for the Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center, told the Ohio County Fiscal Court on May 20 that 14 Ohio County High School students achieved “High School Hero” status by donating blood four times before graduation.
Ellis said the students' donations produced blood products that can be used locally and regionally and recognized one student, Maddox Mason, as the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship payable to a higher-education institution; Mason plans to attend Western Kentucky University to study electrical engineering. Ellis also recognized Kylee Newcomb for eight donations and presented the Dawn Williams Lifetime Community Service Award for that achievement.
Ellis told the court the program helped collect 62 units of blood during the school year and resulted in about 86 blood products for area hospitals. The court discussed prior financial support — members gave $100 each last year and the court said it would consider matching or repeating that support this year.
The court did not make a formal appropriation on May 20 but indicated continued support for the blood-center program and students being honored.
