Court awards resurfacing work; Hamilton Hickel bid reflects small price increases

The Scott County Fiscal Court accepted a resurfacing proposal and awarded work to Hamilton Hickel for a program that would repave roughly 12.1 miles of county roads, the court said May 20.
JR, a county road official, presented a list of roads included in the resurfacing draft: Morgan Manor Drive (0.68 mile), Helm Court (0.03), Lena Court (0.07), Stonehorse Lane (0.28), Cane Run (4.10), Locust Grove (0.313), Suitable Road (2.569), Harbor Village Drive (0.75), Lakeside Drive (0.4) and Sims (2.45), totaling about 12.1 miles.
Only one contractor bid the package: Hamilton Hickel (transcript identified as Hamilton Hickel/ Hamilton Hinkle in places). JR said the pricing shows modest increases from the bid two years ago: base and surface prices rose slightly (base had been $75.50 per ton two years ago; surface was $79 then and is $81 this year), and labor increased from $27.50 per ton to $30 per ton. "So labor actually increased, and the surface and base went up a little bit," JR said.
Magistrate Rob Jones moved to accept the bid and Rick Hostetler seconded; the court approved the motion by voice vote.
Court members said the county committed some additional funds this year to cover resurfacing needs and that JR monitors roads frequently to prioritize those in need of upgrade.
The award covers resurfacing and associated leveling/wedge and tack materials; staff noted the county solicits local bids partially to obtain lower rates than state contracts in some cases. No contract amount was read into the record during the session.
