The Lakeland District Board of Trustees approved a request to allow Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) to provide a dual-credit political science course on the Lakeland High School campus.
Board members clarified that dual-credit courses remain college courses — with college-controlled syllabi and instructor qualifications — and are not part of the district’s curriculum approvals. One trustee said community oversight of courses taught on campus is appropriate, even if the college controls the syllabus and technical support.
Trustees noted that NNU’s instructor qualifications differ from some local community-college requirements; the board discussed that NNU’s standards may be less restrictive than some institutions that require a master’s degree in the instructor’s field. A motion to approve the request carried on a voice vote.
