Lakeland trustees approve most MOUs, clarify levy will cover potential cost increases

The Lakeland District Board of Trustees approved a series of routine memorandum of understanding (MOU) renewals with partner organizations, including agreements with local police departments and outside service providers, and discussed budgetary impacts tied to the district’s recently passed levy.
Board members voted to approve the RealLife MOU and to authorize renewals of MOUs for the Rathsboro Police Department and Spirit Lake Police Department (the latter described as grant-funded). The City of Rath MOU was tabled until the district receives a signed copy from the city council; the board agreed to wait for the city’s signature before finalizing its action.
Superintendent materials and staff comments noted that one previously planned MOU with Heritage Health was removed from the agenda after the provider informed the district it lacked personnel to continue in-district therapist services.
The board discussed a Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office MOU and asked for clarification on what costs the district covers. Staff said county commissioners set a minimum cost-sharing threshold that limits negotiations; the district covers certain training costs and some position-related expenses for school-resource officers and armed guards. Finance staff reported the recently approved levy includes a buffer to absorb anticipated increases in personnel-related MOU costs.
Chair Thompson said the district budgeted conservatively for potential increases tied to these agreements. Finance follow-up on specific levy line items and training cost details was requested and will be provided at a subsequent meeting.
Trustees approved the renewals by voice vote. Several motions carried without recorded roll-call tallies.
The approvals mean the district will continue contractual partnerships for safety and in-school services next year while staff confirm exact dollar amounts and return with any necessary amendments.
