WFRC highlights Golden Spoke ride, new statewide bikeways map and safety tour

Hugh Van Wagonen, WFRC active transportation lead, said a delegation of about 30 regional staff and officials visited Jersey City and Hoboken to study street‑safety and multimodal infrastructure; those New Jersey cities reported no traffic fatalities for several years, and visiting staff examined design and policy approaches that contributed to that record.
WFRC also marked its eighth annual Golden Spoke ride during Bike Month; organizers said more than 600 people registered to ride segments of the regional spine, which spans roughly 350 miles of existing and planned trails. Van Wagonen credited partner agencies, including the Jordan River Commission, UDOT and UTA, for organizing the event.
The council also announced a new statewide consolidating resource of on‑the‑ground bikeways, hosted at bikeways.utah.gov. WFRC staff described the map as a unified dataset of existing bikeways and encouraged member agencies to use it as a reference for planning and outreach.
Officials noted several recent local project milestones, including a Layton underpass ribbon cutting meant to improve trail continuity and safety near Highway 89; Mayor Joy Petro highlighted the project’s importance for local riders.
WFRC said it will maintain the bikeways dataset in partnership with the state and urged jurisdictions to review and contribute updates.
