Student reps highlight prom, internships, CTE and new programs ahead of graduation

Student representatives from several Springfield schools reported on end‑of‑year events, career and technical opportunities and programs intended to prepare students for college and careers.
Ava Moore, senior class president and student representative from Putnam Vocational Technical Academy, told the committee the senior year has been "very stressful" but celebrated events such as Senior Decision Day, a talent show and a senior cookout. "No matter if they're going to a 4‑year college, a 2‑year college, a military branch, or straight to the workforce, our twelfth grade team ... wanted to make sure that we all felt welcome, celebrated, and appreciated," Moore said.
Leishani Saldana, an 11th grader at Springfield Public Day High, described the Spanish for Health Professions course and a math field trip about stage‑lighting, and noted her work at a PBIS store that teaches job skills. Camora (Kamora) Diaz, senior class president at the High School of Science and Technology (Scitech), said the school has expanded vocational offerings and internships, and credited counselors and staff with supporting students' personal and academic growth.
Brian Avila, representing Renaissance High School, spoke about school traditions that celebrate seniors, and Tony Martins, a junior at Springfield Virtual School, said students are producing the school's first yearbook, held a successful prom and will have an in‑person spring fling and a June 6 graduation that will be livestreamed.
The student reports emphasized experiential learning, career‑focused programs and community events as students prepare for June graduations. The committee thanked the student representatives and their advisors and concluded the student advisory portion of the meeting.
