Commissioners set July visit to conservation district equipment field day for small farmers

Strafford County commissioners agreed to schedule a site visit for a conservation district equipment field day so members can view machines the district makes available for low‑cost rental to farmers.

The event, described by a conservation district representative as the district’s second such field day, will be set up in the field across from the courthouse and was scheduled for July 17. The district’s demonstration is timed for a Friday afternoon in past years to avoid midday farm work; organizers plan to offer light refreshments and in‑person equipment explanation.

Conservation district staff said the district purchased most of the equipment with grant funding and charges only a small fee for use to help cover maintenance. “This will give new farmers and small farmers an opportunity to see what equipment would be available to them that would cost them a lot more,” the district representative said.

County commissioners discussed how the county’s financial support for the conservation district helps local operators access additional federal funds and noted the district works closely with the Cooperative Extension, while remaining a separate entity. Commissioners were invited to forward questions to the district in advance so staff could bring answers to the site visit.

The discussion included estimates that the district has expanded its inventory to roughly eight to a dozen pieces of equipment; the precise inventory count was described in the district’s budget materials rather than in the meeting comments. Commissioners encouraged colleagues to attend and to invite the public and legislative delegation members who have attended in past years.
