County says jail fire-alarm upgrade complete; live-scan hooked to internet but staff training required

County meeting participants reported that the Lawrence County jail’s fire-alarm upgrade was completed on Monday and that the facility’s live-scan machine has been connected to the internet, but staff said training and privacy safeguards must be completed before full use.
A meeting speaker said the fire-alarm upgrade to replace the old system was completed and the system is “fully up and functioning.” Deputy Ward said the live-scan unit is now hooked up to the internet and that everyone in the building will need privacy training before the system is used for routine operations.
Officials told commissioners they expect the training to be short but said it will be required for all staff who will operate or access the live-scan system. The live-scan connection is also expected to support the jail’s time clock and other integrated systems.
Separately, staff said they have been told Verizon is running a fiber-optic line from the courthouse to Central Court and that County staff were told by Mr. Bordenaro he is attempting to extend a similar line; if the fiber reaches the jail it could provide a direct connection between the jail and courthouse systems.
No formal procurement or contract award related to the fiber or the live-scan training was voted on during the meeting.
