Council agrees to add annual Lunar New Year and Hindu Heritage month proclamations to June agenda, 4-3

The Newcastle City Council voted 4-3 on May 20 to add to the June 3 meeting agenda two items: a resolution to proclaim January as Lunar New Year month each year and a resolution to proclaim October as Hindu Heritage month each year.

Deputy Mayor Lakota moved to add the agenda items and the motion was seconded and put to a vote. The motion passed 4-3; the council did not take the substantive proclamations themselves at the May 20 meeting but instructed staff to prepare separate resolutions for the June 3 agenda.

Councilmembers who spoke in favor described the items as part of routine recognition of cultural observances; Councilmember Sharpenau noted the symbolic value of routinely recognizing cultural heritage months and referenced the service of a longstanding council member as context for expanding annual recognitions. No fiscal impacts or binding policy changes were created by the motion — the council merely directed staff to prepare the two proclamations for future consideration.

The council recorded its vote on the procedural motion to add the items: four in favor, three opposed. Staff confirmed they will prepare separate resolutions and present them on June 3 for council consideration and possible adoption.
