Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority presents recycling grants to local schools

Barney described Operation Green Lead as a voluntary recycling program started with assistance from Apple Valley Waste in which parent volunteers or staff transport collected recycling to the county recycling center. He told the commission the authority tracks participating schools’ collections and issues annual awards to participating schools.
Barney highlighted student volunteers at South Middle School who help collect and stage recyclables for pickup. The presentation was ceremonial and included photo opportunities; no county appropriation or budget amendment was recorded during the meeting.
Commissioners thanked the schools and authority staff for the program and encouraged continued participation.
