Berkeley County proclaims National Salvation Army Week, hears 2024 local impact report

The Berkeley County Commission recognized Salvation Army Martinsburg during a proclamation read at the May 12 meeting and heard a summary of the organization’s 2024 local service work.
Captain Ramaji of the Salvation Army Martinsburg presented the proclamation and an impact report, telling commissioners the local unit served more than 6,000 people through social services in 2024. "Last year alone the Salvation Army Martinsburg 84 cents of every dollar donated went into the serving community," he said. The impact report cited 2,160 people assisted through the food pantry, 2,040 people who received clothing assistance, 180 people helped with utility assistance and more than 5,000 Christmas toys distributed through the Angel Tree program.
Commissioners thanked the Salvation Army leadership and volunteers. During the presentation, the Salvation Army described newer local programs including a "family closet" to distribute donated clothing free of charge and a recent seniors outreach that provided holiday gift baskets for a limited number of older residents.
The commission approved the proclamation by voice vote. No county funding action was recorded during the meeting; the presentation was a ceremonial recognition and a report of the nonprofit’s activities and statistics for 2024.
