Parent recounts alleged bullying at Covington; asks for audit and uniform application of code of behavior

At the May 21 meeting a parent identified as Anisa Stroy described multiple incidents affecting her daughter at Covington Harper and asked the board to audit the division’s handling of bullying reports and how staff apply the code of behavior.
Stroy recounted alleged threats, insults, humiliation, pushing and a bathroom privacy violation and said school officials told the family those incidents did not meet the division’s bullying standard. She said Covington currently lacks a bullying-prevention coordinator and asked how staff are held accountable when disciplinary issues are not addressed consistently.
Stroy requested an audit into the process by which online bullying inquiries are investigated; she cited a figure that 64% of such inquiries were not found to be bullying. She also asked the board to reconsider the level of consequences and supported stronger consequences after intervention for repeat bullying offenders.
The board received the comment during the public-comment period; no immediate corrective action was taken at the meeting, but the public comment raised concerns the board discussed later while voting on the new code of behavior.
