Mayor asks council to consider city resolution backing petition to improve dangerous intersection

Mayor Tara Beda told the council that a resident, identified on social media as Jordan Harris, has raised concerns about repeated crashes at the intersection of East 15th Road and Route 18 outside Streator city limits and requested city backing for her petition.
"I think our number 1 priority of any, elected government ... is the safety and well being of its citizens," Mayor Beda said, arguing that even though the intersection is outside city limits many Streator residents use it.
The mayor said Harris has contacted the county, township and state but had not secured changes and that a city resolution or letter of support might help her appeal. "I don't see us being able to really do a lot because it's outside of jurisdiction. But I think if she had the support and the weight of the city of Streator in her bid, I think it would help her," Beda said.
Council members did not take a formal vote but the mayor requested staff prepare a resolution for an upcoming meeting; the clerk confirmed a resolution could be prepared for a future agenda.
The mayor described similar past improvements at other intersections that followed high‑profile crashes, and said she planned to speak with the resident this week. The city did not commit to any direct roadway work because the sites are outside municipal jurisdiction.
